The winners of our first-ever Tomato Tale contest

Tomato Tale contest presented by

To get in the Tomato Art Fest spirit, we teamed up with Nashville writers’ collective The Porch on a Tomato Tale contest — readers and friends submitted 10-word, tomato-themed stories via Twitter, and The Porch’s Susannah Felts chose her favorites of the bunch.

The carrot (or tomato, as it were) held in front of said contributors: dinner for two at exceptional East Nashville restaurant Lockeland Table.

We read through (and thoroughly enjoyed) all the submissions, which ranged from poetic to silly to all-out weird (in that good way that East Nashville is weird). We expected East Nashvillians to show some serious creative chops — even with the 10-word restriction — and we certainly weren’t disappointed. So, without further ado, the winner of our first-ever Tomato Tale contest, as picked by The Porch’s Felts:

Tomato Tale winner

Congratulations to tweeter @oh_skinny, a.k.a. Eric Skinner, who penned that dramatic tale. (Hope you dry out and get back on your feet, Cherry.) Enjoy that fine meal, Eric (and let us know how you enjoyed it).

What with all the entertaining contributions, Felts also wanted to heap praise (and offer prizes) to some runners-up. The following Twitter scribes snag 10 percent off any of The Porch’s upcoming writing classes or workshops, which range from plot to character development and beyond.

And just a little more tomato love: Here, some honorable mention submissions that Felts (and we) loved as well:

Congrats, all — and big thanks to everyone who submitted a tale. We feel suitably inspired for the 2014 Tomato Art Fest, which runs Friday and Saturday, Aug. 8 and 9. For more on the fest, drop by TomatoArtFest.com, and check out the latest issue of The East Nashvillian.
