Halloween in East Nashville

Welcome to October, and the onset of all things spooky and weird. (Or, well, the continuation of weird, but the onset of spooky.)
As with other years, there’s plenty planned in the neighborhood this month to celebrate Halloween/scary stuff, and we’ll doubtlessly see more opportunities to trick/treat/don costumes/get frightful before October 31. Meantime, we rounded up a few East Nashville events that nod to the season. Have one we missed? Love to hear about it.

Save the Roxy Theater 'Invasion of the Body Snatchers' screening

When: Friday, Oct. 3, 7:30 p.m.
Where: Outside the Roxy Theatre, 827 Meridian St.
Details: The folks behind the Save the Roxy Theatre campaign continue their outdoor movie events, bringing a fittingly scary one out for October: 1978 creepy-clones flick Invasion of the Body Snatchers. The Mommy UP Cafe Food truck will also be on site serving dogs, burgers, wings and curly fries. Bonus if you need a stiff drink after the movie: Adults 21 and up can snag a post-screening half-price drinks coupon for the Wilburn Street Tavern across the street. More

Backyard Movie Night at Fond Object

When: Sunday, Oct. 5, 7 p.m.
Where: Fond Object, 1313 McGavock Pike
Details: Need a little funny with your fear? Riverside Village spot Fond Object’s latest outdoor movie night includes a screening of “horror/comedy mash-up” Motel Hell, a “tongue-in-cheek send-up of hillbilly horror movies of the 1970s.” Doors are at 7, a screening of Episode 12 of The Prisoner "Hammer into Anvil" starts at 7:30, and Motel Hell kicks off at 8:30. Feel free to BYOB.

Horror Hootenanny

Dr. Gangrene’s Horror Hootenanny 11

When: Saturday, Oct. 11, 6 p.m.
Where: Cult Fiction Underground, 1048 E Trinity Ln.
Details: If you’re a scary movie fan, it’s gonna be hard to beat this one: Not only will the Horror Hootenanny feature a screening of the 1974 classic The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, but John Dugan — who played Grandpa — will be there in the flesh to answer questions. Need more? Butch Patrick, a.k.a. Eddie Munster, is also scheduled to be there, plus there’s live music from the Creeping Cruds and others, a costume party and other fun. Admission is $7, $6 if you’re in costume. More

Grassy Knoll Movie Nights - 'Rosemary’s Baby'

When: Sunday, Oct. 12, sundown
Where: Grassy Knoll next to Bongo East, 109 S 11th St.
Details: Nothing like enjoying the fall evening weather out in a field with a bunch of friends while watching a 1968 classic that’ll haunt your nightmares for weeks. Whee! The October installment of beloved al fresco movie series Grassy Knoll Movie Nights brings out Rosemary's Baby, and you can likely expect some food trucks and local beverages too. As always: sundown, $5 entry ($4 with a can donation for Second Harvest, $1 for kids 12 and under). More

Lux O Matic

Dr. Sketchy's Anti-Art School October Edition

When: Sunday, Oct. 19, 6 to 9 p.m.
Where: Logue's Black Raven Emporium, 2915 Gallatin Pike
Details: Some of us like to celebrate the spooky season in more creative ways. This meeting of Dr Sketchy's Anti-Art School includes the regular stuff — three-hour live figure drawing sessions for artists working in any medium — but your ringleader, Lux O Matic, will be presiding as her Halloween alter ego: Morticia Addams. And no one said you can’t draw your figures as zombies or vampires or angry head-butting goat people. (At least not that we know of.) It’s $10 to draw, $5 to hang. More.

Pumpkin Ale Patch

Pumpkin Ale Patch Fall Party

When: Friday, Oct. 24, 6 p.m. to midnight
Where: 1604 Shelby Ave.
Details: The fun folks behind East Nashville Underground bring back their celebration of fall: “basically a pumpkin patch party for grown-ups... make s'mores, sit around the fire, dance in the yard, get into the bands, try new fall beers, meet the neighbors, watch old classics, and take home pumpkins.” After dark (about 10 p.m.), there’ll be an outdoor screening of the original Halloween; starting at 7:30, Twiggs, Churchyard and Justin Kalk Orchestra will provide the live music. Party entry’s $5 at the door, and pumpkins/seasonal beer will be on offer for the first 125 attendees. Feel free to BYOB, bring extra cash for tacos from Actual Food Nashville, and if you’re drinking, bring your ID. More.

Third Annual Witches’ Ball

When: Friday, Oct. 31
Where: Logue's Black Raven Emporium, 2915 Gallatin Pike
Details: All the details aren’t in on this one just yet, but we know a) it’s happening and b) it’s happening Halloween night. Past Witches’ Balls have included the requisite costume party, plus movie screenings, gogo-dancing burlesque witches, tarot card readings and other Halloween-y fun, and we expect that this year’s Ball will be similarly fleshed-out. More soon.

Halloween at Cult Fiction Underground

Halloween Night at Cult Fiction Underground

When: Friday, Oct. 31, 8 p.m.
Where: Cult Fiction Underground, 1048 E Trinity Ln.
Details: This should be a fine opportunity to explore Cult Fiction Underground’s new, bigger space: live music from Bella Morte, a screening of The Return of the Living Dead, then dance-party times with DJs Ichabod and Jimmy. (Plus a night-long costume party, of course.) Film’s at 8, Bella Morte at 10, dance party around midnight. Tickets for all three components run $15; just the concert and dance party are $10; if you just wanna see the movie, $5 at the door. More
More to come. Have an East Nashville Halloween-related or -themed event to share? Drop a line!
