We figure that if you dedicate your life to studying the things that go on inside the human mouth, you might have a particularly good understanding of quality food and drink.
But when we reached out to Dr. Thomas Hadley — the family dentist who leads East Side Smiles, the 2012 president of the Historic East Nashville Merchants Association and the guy pictured above with his lovely family — about his East Nashville food favorites, we figured he’d only want to point toward treats suited for oral health. This particular tooth pro/craft beer moonlighter, however, isn't quite so predictable.
"Everything I like is in fact not particularly great for your teeth -- or the rest of your body for that matter," Hadley says. "I like all the bad stuff! I actually tell my patients to do what they want in moderation and I'm here to fix any problems that arise. I'm the carpe-diem dentist."
Phew. So with that air cleared, we asked Dr. Hadley to share some of his personal favorite East Nashville foods and drinks -- stuff that, of course, he enjoys in moderation before flossing and thoroughly brushing with a soft-bristled toothbrush.
Here, his neighborhood favorites, “with no regard to teeth.”
5) Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams (1892 Eastland): chocolate hazelnut ice cream sandwich
4). Pied Piper Eatery (1601 Riverside): The two egg breakfast
3). Edley's Bar-B-Que (908 Main St.): pork or chicken tacos
2). Five Points Pizza (1012 Woodland): the lunch special slice and garden salad
1). Olive & Sinclair Chocolate Co. (1628 Fatherland): Mexican Style Cinn-Chili Chocolate bar
